ASE-4

Anode Splice Encapsulation Kit

How do you seal up a standard split bolt or a compression connector?  It sounds like it should be simple (spoiler alert:  it is) but as soon as you begin to start to do it; you realize it is a bit more complicated.  Two cables moving into a connection that has only one cable on the other side.  That a scenario that has disaster written all over it.  Sure you can wrap each individual cable and then press them together and then wrap the entire thing; but that configuration is likely to leave leak paths all over the path.  Leak paths are not good.  Leak paths are bad.  Leak paths are very bad.  Beyond that, you'd end up with multiple installation steps, multiple components and you'd be heavily reliant on the skill of the installer. Yes, there are many incredibly gifted electricians on this planet.  Unfortunately, like any profession, there are also a few out there who might simply be having a bad day.  That is where our Anode Splice Encapsulation Kit (ASE) comes in.

The ASE is coated with a very thick self encapsulating adhesive that fills and flows to seal up every crack, crevice and possible leak path that might threaten your cable connection.  ASE is designed specifically for protecting the anode splice connections of HMWPE and HDPE (and others).

The ASE installation is very simple, requiring no special skills or equipment.  Rapid, reliable and repeatable installations are a hallmark feature of this product.  In addition, the ASE-4 can cover a wide range of cable sizes, reducing inventory requirements and simplifying the entire process of purchasing this material.  There is no labor required for taping and there is no time wasted with mixing components or waiting for cure times.  ASE-4 can be installed in temperatures as low as -40F.

Full installation for an ASE-4 can be completed as quickly as 2-3 minutes.  Direct burial can occur immediately upon completion of the full installation.  The installed product is mechanically strong, electrically insulated and sealed from moisture and contamination.

Anode Splice Encapsulation Shrink Sleeve Kit

Anode Splice Encapsulation Shrink Sleeve Kit (ASE)

The Raychem Anode Splice Encapsulation Kit is a heat-shrinkable sleeve internally coated with self-encapsulating adhesive that enables it to completely insulate and seal such connectors as the standard split bolt and compression connector.

The ASE is designed specifically for protecting anode splice connections of HMWPE, HDPE, and Raychem Permarad cables used in impressed current cathodic protection systems.

Insulated and sealed in minutes:
Simplicity of design enables rapid and reliable installation. A single splice encapsulation kit covers many cable sizes while eliminating time-consuming taping as well as compound mixing and curing. The kits can be installed in approximately three minutes at temperatures as low as -40°F (—40°C).

ASE splice encapsulations can be direct-buried immediately after installation. The completed encapsulation is mechanically strong, electrically insulated, and sealed from moisture and contamination.

Material properties:
The dielectric strength of ASE splices has a typical value of 300 volts/mil (min) @ .050" using ASTM D149 test method; the volume resistivity is 1 x 1013 ohm cm min. ASTM D257; cold impact —55°C, "no breaking," ASTM D746, and water absorption (24 hr @ 25°C), .5% max, ASTM D570.

The ASE splices are designed and tested to ANSI C119.1.

Materials in kit:
1 Heat-shrinkable wrap-sleeve
1 Insulation strip or black insulation tape
2 Tie wrap
1 Closure channel

Anode Splice Encapsulation Shrink Sleeve Kit Installation Guide

Anode Splice Encapsulation Shrink Sleeve Kit Install Instructions

Preparing the Cable:

Install connector. Note maximum length of stripped wire leads. Wipe off excess contact compound.

Position tie wrap(s) as shown. Two are required for "H" connections. Note: 1/8 inch gap produced for adhesive encapsulation.

Wrap insulation strip or tape centered on connection. If required, heat strip end slightly to tack in place.

Position Sleeve:

Position sleeve closure over main cable run.

Slide channel onto sleeve rails.

Channel ends should extend evenly beyond ends of sleeve.

Heat-shrink assembly:

Using yellow tip of torch flame, apply heat in a uniform back and forth motion, giving special emphasis to rail/channel area.

Apply heat until all indicator paint changes color. Adhesive will extrude from sleeve ends

A few minutes cooling may be required for complete encapsulation to occur between cables.
