FS/FPK Flange Protection Kit

Flange Seal / Flange Protection Kit / Re-Enterable Flange Coating

corroded flange
You don't want your flange to look like this!

Like all things that are going to be buried underground, flanges need some type of corrosion protection solution or they will end up rusted and leaking.  Flanges offer different challenges than straight line pipe would, in terms of applying a coating system that will be functional for years to come, protects the bolts, protects the gaskets and offers a corrosion prevention solution to the adjacent pipe as well.

That is where our Covalence Flangeseal comes in (similar to the Canusa FPK Flange Protection Kit).  The Covalence FS is a high expansion, fiber reinforced shrink sleeve that is made in a way that allows it to wrap around a Flange while still shrinking down to the pipe surface.  The FS is made to shrink ~66% which allows it to be used on many, many different flange/pipe OD dimensions.

It utilizes a highly aggressive butyl mastic as the sealant that prevent oxygen or whatever from reaching any steel on your flange (or the gasket).  In addition, it does this in a way that can prevent your gasket and bolts from getting all gummed up - meaning the flange CAN BE re-enterable at a point in the future (if that is something of value to you).

With a very quick installation, stop wasting money on costly solutions that are labor intensive.  Flangeseal can be installed in minutes with nothing more than a propane torch (and regulator).

Caseal and Flange Protection Kit Shrink Ratios

How much does Caseal and Flangseal Material Shrink?

Both Caseals and Flangeseals are made using a Covalence reinforced, high expansion, mastic sealant coated heat shrink sleeve.  The material essentially has two layers of a modified polyolefin backing, with a PP fiber mesh woven between them.  This gives the sleeves excellent penetration resistance, abrasion resistance and gouge resistance.  In addition - this allows the patented process to make a shrink sleeve that shrinks as much as 66%.

Held together by sewing a nylon zipper onto the sleeve (using heat resistance kevlar thread), the sleeve stays in the shape of a tube through the entire shrink process.  The zipper is protected from the torch by a closure strip.

Looking at just a few of the Caseal sizes; a Caseal is able to wrap around a 48" OD Casing pipe and shrink down and seal to an 18" carrier pipe (if allowed) though the CS 48000 is primarily designed to seal to a 30" carrier.  There just aren't a lot of scenarios where someone would pay for a 48" casing pipe and put an 18" carrier running through it.  Waste of money!

Likewise a Flangeseal is able to shrink in a similar manner.  As one example, an FS 48000 is designed to wrap around a flange with an actual OD of 48".  That Flangeseal could then shrink down to a 17" Pipe (again - this would likely never happen).

In either case, both Caseal and Flangeseal are capable of covering a multitude of different Casing / Carrier / Flange / Pipe dimensions - and we almost certainly have a product that can help with your project.

Canusa FPK has been Obsoleted

Canusa FPK - No Longer Available

Raychem Flange Seal
Covalence's FlangeSeal

If you have been a user of Canusa's FPK (Flange Protection Kit) and you are being told that product is no longer available, the information you've been given is correct.  Now that Canusa and Covalence are "sister companies" this is a case where two product lines (Canusa FPK and Covalence FS) have been consolidated with only the Covalence Flangeseal remaining as an option.

Flangeseal is a high expansion, fiber reinforced shrink sleeve that uses a very aggressive butyl mastic to prevent water, air, etc from getting to your flange.  It is also "re-enterable" at a later time if needed.  That is accomplished by putting a layer of cardboard over the flange itself (so the bolts don't get gummed up with the mastic material.

With a 66% shrink ratio built into the sleeve backing, FS is able to bridge the differences between actual Flange OD (<--- you must have this to order!) and pipe OD.  Installation is very straightforward and does not require special training.

I'd love to discuss with you!  steve@jsicoatings.com    936/321-3333

First - you're cleaning up the flange - making sure there are no sharp edges that will potentially rip the sleeve during installation.

If the line is PE coated, lightly abrade the PE.

Wipe the area down with a solvent cleaner to removed dirt, dust and debris.

Preheat the flange area so ~140F.  Be cautious with the flame around your gaskets, etc.

If PE coated, apply a chamfer to create an angle at the PE stepdown.

Wrap the supplied cardboard around the Flange, centered.

Secure with tape - be sure the cardboard has overlapped itself.

Loosen the release paper in the Flangeseal.

Wrap the FS around the Flange (centered on the flange).

Zip it up!

Be certain your propane torch (with a regulator) is putting out a broad, bushy, yellow flame.

Secure the closure first by heating it AWAY FROM THE ZIPPER

Pat the closure down (the closures job in this application is to protect the zipper from the torch)

Begin shrinking on the flange first -- broad strokes with the torch - always moving (don't burn it!)

As the sleeve conforms to the flange - move toward the edges (shrinking 1 at a time)

Roll the overlap area with a silicon roller or gloved hand.  Do not displace mastic - but make sure the overlap area is in contact with the pipe.

Mastic flow should be evident on both sides of the sleeve (as the backing shrinks, mastic is pushed out)

As an option - you can trim off the overhanging closure strip and zipper - BUT ONLY AFTER THE SLEEVE HAS COOLED.

Canusa Aqua-Shield FPK (High Expansion)

Canusa FPK - Flange Protection Kit

Canusa FPK
Canusa's Flange Protection Kit

Canusa has a high expansion, high recovery shrink sleeve material that is designed for provide corrosion protection and sealing of flanges and other high profile pipeline substrates.  The FPK (Canusa Flange Protection Kit) was yellow in color and could be used on a variety of different pipeline and flange dimensions.  The product has a roughly 60% shrink built into it.

The material used to make the Flange Protection Kit can also be used to coat casings, bell and spigot joints and high profile couplings.

As you may or may not know; Seal for Life purchased the Canusa product line a few years ago, making Canusa and Covalence/Raychem essentially "sister companies."  Recently, there has been a push to move Canusa FPK users toward Covalence FS (Flange Seal).

Flangeseal is a product that has a 66% shrink ratio.  In addition, Flangeseals utilize a very tough, fiber reinforced backing that brings excellent penetration resistance, impact resistance and bursting strength to the product.  All important qualities when coating something like a flange.
