Powercrete J: The Go-To Field Joint Coating for HDD and Tough Pipeline Applications

When it comes to protecting pipeline field joints—especially in demanding environments like horizontal directional drilling (HDD) and bores—you need a coating system that can handle more than just the basics. That’s where Powercrete J continues to stand out as a premier solution in the industry.

Backed by Seal for Life Industries, Powercrete J has built a reputation for delivering exceptional performance in some of the most challenging pipeline conditions out there.

Let’s start with where Powercrete J really shines: directional drills, bores, and high-stress installations.

These applications demand:

  • Extreme abrasion resistance

  • Strong Shore-D

  • Durability in wet dry pipeline cycles

Powercrete J checks all those boxes.

This ceramic-modified, 100% solids epoxy is specifically engineered to provide corrosion and abrasion protection for both mainline pipe and field joints. Whether you're pulling through rocky soil during an HDD or dealing with difficult right-of-way conditions, this coating is designed to hold up.

While Powercrete J is a go-to for HDD contractors, it’s not limited to specialty applications.

Many contractors are using it for:

  • Standard girth weld field joints

  • Rehabilitation work

  • Tie-ins and fittings

Why? Because it offers:

  • Excellent adhesion to FBE, liquid epoxies, and even coal tar epoxy (CTE)

  • Strong mechanical properties

  • The flexibility to be hand applied depending on the jobsite needs

One of the biggest advantages of Powercrete J is how adaptable it is in real-world conditions.

  • Steel: SSPC-SP10 (Sa 2½) abrasive blast recommended

  • FBE: SSPC-SP7 (Sa 1) sweep blast to remove gloss

  • Handles situations where full blasting isn’t feasible

As long as the substrate temperature is at least 5°F above dew point, you're good to go.

  • Can be applied up to 20 mils (500 microns) per layer

  • Multi-coat builds up to 60 mils (1500 microns) depending on requirements

Powercrete J is designed to be user-friendly and efficient.

From the Product Data Sheet, a few highlights worth calling out:

  • 100% solids, no VOCs

  • Meets AWWA C210, EN 10289, and CSA Z245.30 standards

  • Excellent soil stress resistance

  • Operating temperature up to 140°F (60°C)

And for those tracking coverage:

  • ~81.5 ft² per gallon at 20 mils

  • ~40.1 ft² per gallon at 40 mils

Another area where Powercrete J really delivers is availability and logistics.

  • Offered in 2 lb, 4 lb, 10 lb, or custom kits

  • Orders typically ship within 1 day (often same day)

  • Common order sizes range from 8 kits to 20–30 kits

Bottom line: no order is too small, and you won’t be waiting around when the job is ready to move.

If you’re working in HDD, bores, or any application where coatings take a beating, Powercrete J has proven itself time and time again. But its versatility also makes it a strong candidate for standard field joints and rehabilitation work.

It’s that combination of performance, flexibility, and availability that keeps contractors coming back to it.

If you haven’t looked at Powercrete J recently—or only think of it as an HDD coating—it might be time to take another look.

Powercrete J: The Premier Two-Part Epoxy for Field Joint Protection

When it comes to protecting pipeline weld joints, not all coatings are created equal. In demanding applications like directional drills and road bores, the stakes are even higher. Abrasion resistance, adhesion, and long-term corrosion protection aren’t optional — they’re essential.

That’s where Powercrete J stands apart.  It was built for Directional Drills and Road Bores

In HDD (horizontal directional drilling) and road bore installations, pipelines are subjected to:

  • Extreme abrasion during pullback

  • High soil stress and friction

  • Challenging environmental conditions

Powercrete J has earned its reputation as a premier two-part epoxy field joint coating specifically because it performs under these exact conditions. Its abrasion resistance and bond strength make it a go-to solution when the weld joint cannot be the weak link.

When you’re pulling thousands of feet through a bore, the last thing you want is coating failure at the weld.

Here’s something many people don’t realize:  Powercrete J isn’t just for HDD and road bores.

It’s also an excellent solution for standard field joints. Even in conventional installations, weld areas deserve the same level of protection as the factory-applied coating. Using a high-performance epoxy ensures continuity of corrosion protection across the entire pipeline.

If your pipe has been factory coated with Powercrete-DD, the recommendation is simple:

Pair it with Powercrete J for the field joints.

Powercrete-DD is widely recognized as one of the best abrasion resistant overcoats (ARO) on the market. And if your pipeline deserves that level of factory protection, it only makes sense to extend that same standard to the weld joints.

Powercrete J is available as a standard in:

  • 2-pound kits

  • 4-pound kits

Custom kit sizes are also available upon request, giving contractors flexibility depending on pipe diameter and project scope.

Want to See It for Yourself?

If you’re in the United States and would like to get your hands on a sample, let’s talk. There’s no substitute for seeing how a product handles in real-world conditions.

When it comes to protecting weld joints — whether in a challenging directional drill or a standard pipeline installation — Powercrete J delivers performance you can trust.

Because your pipeline deserves more than “good enough.”

Powercrete R95: THE High Build Epoxy

Product Spotlight: Powercrete R95 — A Field-Friendly High-Build Epoxy

When it comes to protecting field joints and targeted sections of pipe, crews need coatings that are tough, flexible, and practical to apply in the real world—not just in a lab. That’s exactly where Powercrete R95 shines.

Powercrete R95 is Henkel’s (formerly Seal for Life) high-build, novolac hybrid, two-part epoxy, engineered specifically for demanding field applications. Designed to perform in challenging environments, R95 is rated for continuous service temperatures up to 203°F, making it a strong choice for a wide range of pipeline and facility projects.

R95 can be used as a stand-alone coating, delivering robust corrosion protection on its own. It also plays well with others. Many operators use it as an additional protective layer over FBE or other epoxy coatings, adding extra insurance where conditions are especially aggressive or where coating damage is more likely.

One of the standout features of Powercrete R95 is its ability to be applied up to 30 mils in a single pass. Like all high-build epoxies, achieving that thickness does require some attention from the applicator—but fewer passes can mean faster application and fewer opportunities for defects.

Packaging is important in the field, and R95 checks that box as well. It’s available in:

  • 2 lb kits

  • 4 lb kits

  • 50 ml repair cartridges

  • Custom kit configurations

Powercrete R95 is one of the most field-friendly epoxies we’ve seen—whether you’re coating a field joint, touching up a damaged area, or handling small repairs without wasting material.

Powercrete R95 was designed with applicators in mind. It’s a reliable, flexible option for crews who need epoxy performance without unnecessary complexity.

If you’d like to learn more about Powercrete R95 or discuss where it fits into your next project, we’re always happy to talk.

Pipe Coating Repair Solution

Repairing Epoxy Coating Damage in the Field: What Are You Really Using?

When it comes to repairing holidays and damage in FBE, Dual Layer, Powercrete DD, and other epoxy coatings, the product you choose matters—a lot.

In the field, conditions are rarely perfect. Odds are the surface prep and anchor profile won’t match what was achieved back at the coating plant. And while there are plenty of repair products on the market that mask or hide damage—and might even survive jeeping—we all know the reality. Some of those quick fixes are prone to popping off during temperature cycling or, worse, failing during backfilling.

That’s not a risk anyone wants to take when a pipeline schedule is tight and performance expectations are high.

A Better Option for Coating Repairs

If you’re looking for a repair solution that actually performs like the original coating, it may be time to take a closer look at Powercrete R65/F1 coating repair cartridges.

These cartridges deliver the same excellent coating characteristics as the original system—but in a convenient, easy-to-use 50 ml format designed specifically for field repairs.

Even better? You get the fast-curing properties you need when the clock is ticking and that pipe has to get in the ground now.

What’s Included

Powercrete R65 50 ml repair cartridges are sold by the case and include everything you need to get started:

  • 25 Powercrete R65/F1 50 ml cartridges

  • 50 static mixing tips

  • 1 dispenser gun

No scrambling for extra parts. No delays. Just open the case and get to work.

In Stock and Ready When You Need It

We keep Powercrete R65 cartridges in stock and ready to ship the same day. And if you’re really in a bind, overnight shipping is available to help keep your project moving.

If you’d like to learn more or talk through whether this is the right solution for your application, let’s chat. We’re always happy to help you find a repair system that works as hard as you do.

31 Years of Change, Consistency, and Commitment

Established in 1995, Joint Specialists (JSI) has truly seen it all. Over the past 31 years, one thing has been nearly constant: change. And yet, through every transition, JSI has remained grounded in the same core values—quality products, trusted relationships, and a deep understanding of the industries we serve.

JSI was founded by Stan Simpson and Sam Damico, both of whom began their careers in the 1970s as direct employees of Raychem. When Raychem was sold, Stan and Sam made a bold move. On a Friday, they were Raychem salesmen. By Monday, they were business owners—launching Joint Specialists as a Master Distributor. That leap of faith laid the foundation for more than three decades of success.

Since then, we’ve witnessed an impressive series of name changes across the manufacturers and brands behind our products:

Raychem became Tyco International,
then Covalence,
then Berry Plastics,
then Berry Global,
then Seal for Life,
and now Henkel.

That’s a lot of evolution on paper—but what’s mattered most is what hasn’t changed. The products have continued to be manufactured to the same strict specifications, with the same commitment to performance, reliability, and quality that customers have trusted for decades.

JSI has evolved right alongside the industry. While we began as a Master Distributor for Raychem and Covalence heat shrink sleeves, our offerings have expanded significantly over time. Today, we are also a Master Kitter for Powercrete products and a stocking distributor for Stopaq visco-elastic materials. These additions allow us to better serve a wider range of project needs while maintaining the technical expertise our customers expect.

Innovation has also come from within. In response to real-world field challenges, JSI developed its own proprietary product: BBS—bumpers designed to protect pipelines during multi-pipe pull-through applications such as bores and directional drills. This product reflects what JSI has always been about: listening to customers, understanding the work, and delivering practical solutions.

As we look back on more than 30 years in business, it’s impossible not to recognize the accomplishment of our founders. Building a small business is hard. Sustaining it for over three decades—through industry consolidation, product evolution, and constant change—is something truly worth celebrating.

Here’s to Stan and Sam, and to the people, partnerships, and products that have shaped Joint Specialists into what it is today. The names may change, but our commitment never has.

Powercrete R65 / F1

Powercrete R65/F1: Fast-Cure Performance, Long-Term Protection

When it comes to field-applied corrosion prevention coatings, the demands are simple—but not easy. Crews need a material that applies cleanly, cures quickly, and delivers true long-term protection in the harsh environments where pipelines live their entire lives. Powercrete R65/F1 has become a trusted industry standard because it checks every one of those boxes with consistency.

A Fast-Cure Epoxy That Keeps Projects Moving

Downtime is expensive. Waiting on slow-curing coatings can bottleneck an entire jobsite—especially when tie-ins or holiday repairs need to happen immediately. Powercrete R65/F1 is formulated as a fast-cure epoxy, allowing crews to move quickly, get coatings inspected sooner, and keep construction schedules on track. That fast cure does not come at the expense of performance. When fully cured, R65/F1 delivers a tough, high-build, high-adhesion barrier that protects pipelines from corrosion for decades.

Packaging Options Designed for Real Jobsite Needs

One of the most appreciated advantages of Powercrete R65/F1 is the flexibility in packaging. Different projects demand different volumes, and wasted material is wasted money. That’s why R65/F1 is available in a range of kit sizes, including:

  • 1 lb kits – perfect for small jobs, cutbacks, or short sections of pipe

  • 2 lb kits – a balanced size for typical daily field use

  • 4 lb kits – ideal for spreads with higher daily production

  • Custom kit sizes – tailored for unique applications, specialty work, or large-volume requirements

This scalability means contractors only use what they need—nothing more, nothing less.

Field Repair Options That Solve Real Problems

Coating damage happens. Weather, handling, equipment, and transport all take their toll. Powercrete R65/F1 offers smart solutions that allow crews to respond quickly without breaking stride.

50 ml Repair Cartridges

These small-format cartridges are designed for quick, precise repairs to existing epoxy coatings or fusion bonded epoxy (FBE). They’re easy to deploy, minimize waste, and provide a high-performance repair that blends seamlessly with the surrounding coating.

400 ml Spray Cartridges

For wider areas, irregular surfaces, or repair zones that require a more uniform finish, the 400 ml spray cartridge provides speed, coverage, and consistency. Crews simply snap the cartridge into an applicator and spray—no mixing by hand, no guesswork, and no lost time.

Reliable Corrosion Protection Backed by Field History

Powercrete R65/F1 has earned its reputation over years of successful field performance. It bonds strongly to steel and adheres exceptionally well to prepared surfaces. Once cured, it forms a durable, high-build layer that resists impact, abrasion, soil stress, and moisture—exactly what’s required for long-term corrosion prevention on buried pipelines and field joints.

Built for Efficiency. Built for Durability. Built for the Field.

Every pipeline project is different, but the need for reliable protection never changes. Powercrete R65/F1 brings together fast cure times, flexible packaging options, and proven corrosion resistance—making it a practical solution for contractors, inspectors, and asset owners alike.

If you’d like product data, application guidance, or information on kit availability, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to help connect you with the right materials for your next project.

Introducing New Powercrete Packaging Options: Efficiency, Sustainability & Faster Delivery

 New Powercrete Packaging Option

At Joint Specialists, we’re always looking for smart ways to improve how we deliver industry-leading coating solutions. Today, we’re excited to share an update: we’re in the final development stages of new foil packaging for Powercrete J, Powercrete R65/F1, and Powercrete R95 kits.

These new options will complement—not replace—our traditional packaging. Contractors and distributors will continue to have access to standard material formats, but now with additional choices that improve logistics, cost efficiency, and environmental impact.

What’s New?

We’ve engineered a modified blister pack and expanded our capabilities to include traditional foil pouches as well. Together, these flexible packaging formats open the door to a range of advantages for small and mid-size orders.

Do These Systems Offer Advantages? Absolutely.

1. Major Savings on Freight Costs

For smaller Powercrete kit orders, freight can get disproportionately expensive—sometimes shockingly so. Our new lightweight, compact packaging dramatically reduces dimensional weight, allowing us to ship far more economically without compromising product integrity.

2. Faster Delivery to Remote Job Sites

Construction schedules don’t wait, and neither should your materials. The reduced size and weight of these packages allow us to ship kits more quickly, especially to regions with 2–3 day transit times from our production facility in Conroe, TX. Faster shipping means less downtime, tighter schedule control, and increased project efficiency.

3. A More Sustainable Option

We’re proud to share that this packaging decreases plastic and cardboard waste by approximately 50%. As more companies prioritize environmentally conscious procurement, this provides a meaningful step toward more sustainable pipeline and coating operations—without changing your materials or application workflow.

Want to Learn More?

If you're interested in seeing a sample, exploring freight savings, or learning how this packaging could support your Powercrete needs, we’d love to talk.

At Joint Specialists, Inc. (JSI), we’ve worked with Powercrete systems for decades — and we understand that the key to real-world success isn’t just in the coating itself, but in how it’s packaged, mixed, and applied in the field. That’s why JSI offers not only the full range of standard Powercrete kits, but also custom kit sizes designed to maximize efficiency and minimize waste on every project.

The Full Range of Powercrete Products

JSI provides a complete selection of Powercrete epoxy coatings, each designed to meet specific field and factory coating needs:

  • Powercrete J – available in 2 lb. and 4 lb. kits, ideal for field joints and repair applications where a high-build, 100% solids epoxy is needed.

Every kit is carefully proportioned and packaged for ease of use — ensuring that your crew can mix and apply Powercrete quickly and confidently.

The JSI Advantage: Custom Kit Sizes for Real-World Efficiency

While the standard kit sizes meet most needs, JSI takes Powercrete a step further by offering custom kit packaging tailored to your exact project requirements.

Why does that matter?
Because in the field, efficiency is everything.

  • Reduce waste – No more leftover material that goes unused or cures before it can be applied.

  • Save time – Crews can grab the right-sized kit for the job instead of measuring or splitting kits in the field.

  • Increase consistency – Each kit is perfectly measured, ensuring the correct ratio and performance every time.

  • Improve logistics – Smaller or larger kits can simplify handling, shipping, and inventory depending on your project setup.

JSI’s flexibility in packaging means you get Powercrete coatings that fit your workflow, not the other way around.

Why Powercrete Remains a Field Favorite

Powercrete products are formulated to deliver long-lasting protection against corrosion, impact, and abrasion. Once cured, they form a hard, glossy, and impermeable coating that bonds tightly to steel, fusion-bonded epoxy (FBE), and other substrates.

Key advantages include:

  • 100% solids formulation – No VOCs or solvents.

  • Exceptional adhesion and wetting properties.

  • Fast cure times – ideal for quick backfill or recoating.

  • Proven field performance across multiple decades and applications.

When paired with JSI’s custom kit options, Powercrete becomes even more efficient — helping you complete more work with less waste, in less time.

Powercrete + JSI = Performance and Efficiency

Repairing Powercrete

 Powercrete Repairs

Every coating will have need of a repair at some point or another.  Pipe coatings can often be damaged during transit, while getting pipe into position, during the welding process, etc.  I've even seen coating INTENTIONALLY damaged on job sites!  The world is a wild place!

So you're here because you have some damaged Powercrete (I assume).  This could be:  Powercrete DD, Powercrete J, Powercrete R65/F1 or Powercrete R95.  I'm offering solutions to repair any of those coating based on the parameters below.

I do believe telephone discussions are always the best avenue.  Please feel free to reach out directly if you'd like:  Steve Simpson - 936/321-3333 - steve@jsicoatings.com

For Minor Damage:

When repairing minor damage on a pipeline coating, which can be anything from pinholes to stamp sized damage to gouges (which occurred before the epoxy has cured) you are likely looking at using:

Powercrete R65 50 ml Cartridge Cases - these cases consist of 25 of the 50ml repair cartridges; 50 static mixing tips and 1 dispenser gun.  This material can be used to repair ANY of the Powercrete products.

For Moderate and Severe Damage:

For more significant damage, mixing and applying a "Powercrete Kit" is going to be the better solution.  Depending on the size of the damaged area and the coating thickness required in the coating specification, finding the proper kit size to use as a repair is relatively simple.  As examples, we are able to supply:
  • 1# Kits
  • 2# Kits
  • 3# Kits
  • 4# Kits
  • 10# Kits
  • Or just about any size needed
This will give your crews the repair materials that they need without bringing with it significant waste or down time.
