Pipe Coating Repair Solution

Repairing Epoxy Coating Damage in the Field: What Are You Really Using?

When it comes to repairing holidays and damage in FBE, Dual Layer, Powercrete DD, and other epoxy coatings, the product you choose matters—a lot.

In the field, conditions are rarely perfect. Odds are the surface prep and anchor profile won’t match what was achieved back at the coating plant. And while there are plenty of repair products on the market that mask or hide damage—and might even survive jeeping—we all know the reality. Some of those quick fixes are prone to popping off during temperature cycling or, worse, failing during backfilling.

That’s not a risk anyone wants to take when a pipeline schedule is tight and performance expectations are high.

A Better Option for Coating Repairs

If you’re looking for a repair solution that actually performs like the original coating, it may be time to take a closer look at Powercrete R65/F1 coating repair cartridges.

These cartridges deliver the same excellent coating characteristics as the original system—but in a convenient, easy-to-use 50 ml format designed specifically for field repairs.

Even better? You get the fast-curing properties you need when the clock is ticking and that pipe has to get in the ground now.

Powercrete R65/F1 Spray Cartridge Coverage

Coverage Chart for Powercrete R65/F1 Spray Cartridges

R65 Spray Cartridge
Example of a 400ml Powercrete R65/F1 Spray Cartridge

Spraying epoxy, if you have the correct equipment (proper gun, air compressor) is the most efficient way to apply epoxy.  The spray tip mixes the material for you on its way out and you can go through a cartridge in seconds; getting a nice, smooth finish in the epoxy.

Historically we have supplied Powercrete R65/F1 in 400ml spray cartridges.  We are exploring options to move to larger cartridge sizes, and will keep you posted here when we move forward with an 800ml cartridge.

So when trying to figure out how much coverage you might get from each cartridge, the volume of the material is what is important of course.  The way we tend to look at it around here is:

- What is the Pipe OD?

- What is the mil thickness required by the spec?

That gives us enough information to offer an estimate.  So let's assume for the sake of this discussion that your spec requires 50 mil thickness on your Powercrete R65/F1.  If you are working with 8" pipe; the 400ml cartridge will just about coat one field joint.  But in order to build up that 50 mil thickness; your installer is likely going to use about 1/2 of a cartridge for the initial coat.  Then the installer will go to a second weld joint (already cleaned, etc) and they will apply the 2nd half of that cartridge to the field joint coating.  At about that time, the first joint is already gelling - so the installer will come back with a fresh cartridge and finish out those two joints.  Ultimately ending up in a 1:1 cartridge to joint ratio.
