STOPAQ Offshore Success in the Arabian Gulf: Speed Without Sacrificing Performance

When it comes to offshore pipeline construction, time truly is money. Every hour on a barge carries significant cost, and any process that slows production can quickly turn into a major financial setback.

That was exactly the concern for a major project in the Arabian Gulf, where a client was searching for a better way to handle offshore field joint coatings on pipe sizes ranging from 4” to 18”. The project spanned from 2012 to 2014 — and the mission was clear:

Field joint coating could not be the bottleneck.

The Challenge: Fast, Reliable, Offshore-Ready

The client’s requirements were straightforward — but demanding:

  • A system that was quick and easy to apply

  • Proven, robust, and reliable performance offshore

  • Ready to hit the rollers and face the sea in a very short timeframe

  • Minimal HSE concerns

  • No unnecessary equipment or complicated prep procedures

If you’ve spent any time offshore, you know how difficult it can be to balance speed with long-term corrosion protection. Many coating systems look good on paper but slow down production with cure times, blasting requirements, or complex heating procedures.

This client wasn’t willing to take that risk again.

The STOPAQ Solution

The winning system centered around STOPAQ, combining:

  • Wrappingband CZHT

  • Outerwrap

  • High Impact Shield HT

  • Rockshield

Together, these components delivered exactly what the project demanded.

One of the biggest advantages of the STOPAQ Wrappingband CZHT system is its surface prep requirements.

Instead of full abrasive blasting, surface preparation could be achieved with simple power tools. Offshore, this is a game changer. Less equipment, less logistical complexity, and less downtime.

Speed was critical.

With STOPAQ Wrappingband, there is no cure time required before applying the Outerwrap and High Impact Shield HT. Application can proceed immediately.

That dramatically reduced the cycle time per joint compared to other technologies under consideration — especially those requiring primer cure times or complex heating sequences.

On a barge, shaving minutes off each joint adds up quickly.

The system required:

  • Less heating equipment

  • No hazardous primers

That means fewer HSE risks, simplified compliance, and a safer working environment for crews — all while maintaining coating integrity.

In offshore environments, fewer variables often equal fewer problems.

The coating system was ready to see rollers and seawater within a very short time frame. There was no waiting around for cure development or strength build-up.

For offshore contractors, that kind of reliability isn’t a luxury — it’s essential.

Checking Every Box

The client essentially submitted a checklist. The STOPAQ system checked every one:

Quick and easy to apply

Proven offshore performance

Reduced cycle time

Minimal surface prep requirements

Lower equipment demands

Improved HSE profile

Ready for immediate handling

From 2012 through 2014, this project demonstrated that STOPAQ isn’t just a corrosion solution — it’s a production solution.

Stopaq Case Study - Georgia (the country)

Case Study: Protecting Piping in a Challenging Environment in Georgia

When you think of Georgia, you probably picture sunny orchards filled with peaches. But today, we’re talking about a different Georgia—one that borders the Black Sea. And let me tell you, this environment is far from the idyllic, peach-filled imagery that usually comes to mind. The corrosion challenges in this region are, to put it lightly, brutal.

The unique combination of salt, high chloride content, soil stresses, and the usual suspects of corrosion issues make this an incredibly challenging area for any type of pipeline or infrastructure protection. These environmental factors can quickly accelerate wear and tear, requiring a solution that not only works efficiently but also holds up over time in tough conditions.

The Solution: Stopaq Coatings

For this particular project, a range of Stopaq products were selected to provide comprehensive protection for both the buried and above-ground sections of the piping. Here’s what was used:

  • Stopaq Wrappingband: A protective wrapping for buried pipelines to shield them from the corrosive forces of the soil and water.

  • Stopaq Outerwrap: An additional layer of protection for enhanced durability, especially against physical damage.

  • Stopaq Outerglass Shield: Provides a reinforced layer of protection to prevent wear and tear from external factors.

  • UV Stable Topcoat: To ensure that the above-ground piping was protected from the sun's UV rays, preventing degradation over time.

One of the most impressive aspects of this project was the minimal disruption to the existing system. The lines didn’t need to be shut down at any point, which kept things running smoothly. Surface preparation was kept to a minimum, and importantly, no primers or curable products were required for the application.

In terms of time, the application was remarkably fast. Once the coatings were applied, the backfilling process happened immediately. The ease and speed of this process meant that there was virtually no downtime for the system—an ideal scenario when you need to maintain continuous operations.

The finished product? Well, the coating not only looks great (even if my photos could use a higher resolution), but it also provides long-lasting protection. With the harsh conditions of the Black Sea region, ensuring a strong barrier against corrosion is critical for maintaining infrastructure integrity.

This case study is a perfect example of how the right materials and technologies can be used to tackle even the most challenging corrosion environments. In areas where corrosion risks are high, it’s crucial to rely on reliable and efficient solutions to ensure long-term protection—and that’s exactly what this project achieved.

If you're facing similar challenges in your own projects, consider how Stopaq’s advanced coating systems can help extend the life of your pipelines and reduce maintenance costs in tough environments.

What challenges have you faced when protecting infrastructure in harsh environments? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments below!

Norway: Stopaq Case Study

 Another STOPAQ Case Study: Norway

This latest STOPAQ® case study, completed by the good people of Norway, is a perfect example.

The project site presented a uniquely challenging set of conditions. Noise levels were so extreme that workers could only be exposed for 15 minutes at a time without proper hearing protection. In an environment like that, speed of installation wasn’t just a convenience, it was a necessity.

As if the noise alone weren’t enough, the operating conditions raised the bar even higher. Several of the lines were running at temperatures above 95°C (203°F), while also being subjected to significant vibration and pipe flexing. To make matters more complicated, sand blasting was not an option for surface preparation.

In short, this was not a job for an ordinary coating system.

The solution needed to be:

  • Fast and easy to install

  • Capable of handling high operating temperatures

  • Flexible enough to withstand vibration and pipe movement

  • Effective without blasting surface preparation

  • Durable, reliable, and cost effective

For those new to STOPAQ, the answer might come as a surprise. For those with experience, it won’t.

The solution was Wrappingband CZHT combined with an HTPP Outerwrap. Simple.

This system delivered exactly what the project demanded: excellent corrosion protection under extreme conditions, quick installation in a high-risk environment, and reliable performance at elevated temperatures—all without the need for sand blasting.

And as an added bonus?
The system also provided a noticeable noise-dampening effect, which turned out to be the cherry on top of an already cost-effective, high-performance coating solution.

This project is another reminder that when conditions get tough, simplicity and proven technology often win. STOPAQ once again delivered a solution that met every requirement—and then some.

Sometimes, the best answer really is the simplest one.

Stopaq: Back to Basics (Part 2)

Stopaq: Back to Basics (Part 2)

For more than 30 years, Stopaq visco-elastic material has set the standard in visco-elastic corrosion protection technologies. In an industry where surface preparation, labor, and access can quickly drive costs, Stopaq has earned its reputation by doing something simple—and doing it exceptionally well.

At its core, Stopaq is designed with practicality in mind. Minimal surface preparation, excellent sealing capabilities, and straightforward installation make it an attractive option for a wide range of applications. When you factor in the reduced need for abrasive blasting, significantly lower labor requirements, and minimal scaffolding, the overall economics become even more compelling.

From a materials standpoint, Stopaq is a fully amorphous, non-crosslinkable Polyisobutene (PIB) composition. Once applied, it is totally impermeable, forming a continuous barrier that protects steel from water, oxygen, and other corrosion-driving elements. This visco-elastic behavior allows the material to conform to the substrate, maintain intimate contact with the surface, and continue sealing over time.

Where Stopaq really shines is in repair, rehabilitation, and recoating work—especially for “inside-the-fence” plant and refinery applications. These environments often demand fast turnarounds, limited surface prep, and safe, efficient installation methods. In these scenarios, focusing solely on material price can be misleading.

Instead, the smarter approach is to evaluate the total job cost. When reduced prep, faster installation, and long-term performance are taken into account, Stopaq frequently proves to be one of the most cost-effective solutions available.

If you’re involved in repair, rehab, or recoating projects and aren’t at least considering Stopaq as your primary repair material, you may be doing yourself—and your budget—a disservice.

Stopaq Tank Repair Solutions

Stopaq: More Than Tank Chime Repair — A Complete Corrosion Prevention Strategy

For years, Stopaq has been widely recognized as the industry’s most reliable solution for tank chime sealing. And that reputation is well-earned. The product’s visco-elastic technology, permanent adhesion, and ability to flow, seal, and self-heal have made it the go-to answer for one of the toughest corrosion challenges on storage tanks.

But focusing only on tank chimes undersells what Stopaq really is.
Because Stopaq isn’t just a chime repair product—it’s a full corrosion prevention system engineered to protect every vulnerable area of a storage tank.

Today, tank owners, maintenance teams, and constructors across the globe are discovering that Stopaq delivers long-term, cost-saving protection well beyond the chime. Its advantages apply to roofs, shell-to-concrete interfaces, localized coating repairs, and new construction projects—all with the same consistency, simplicity, and reliability the brand is famous for.

Let’s take a closer look at why Stopaq has become a preferred choice for complete tank protection.

A System Designed for Every Part of the Tank

1. Roof Corrosion Protection

Tank roofs often corrode from the top down due to moisture, UV exposure, and fluctuating temperatures. With Stopaq Wrappingband EZ, asset owners can create a uniform, monolithic, seamless coating that forms a continuous barrier against the elements

Because the material flows into itself, it eliminates gaps and seals off moisture pathways automatically. Even if the coating is damaged, Stopaq’s visco-elastic structure allows it to self-heal—something traditional coatings simply can’t do.

2. Tank Chime Sealing

Stopaq’s flagship application remains the tank chime, where its performance is unmatched.
A combination of Stopaq Filler and Wrappingband EZ creates a permanently flexible, bonded seal that handles decades of tank movement, settling, heating, cooling, and UV exposure

Unlike rigid coatings that crack, peel, or separate from the substrate over time, Stopaq stays visco-elastic forever. It doesn’t age. It doesn’t dry out. It doesn’t disbond. This is why many tank owners now consider it the “install once, protect for life” solution.

3. Fast and Simple Coating Repairs

Traditional coating repairs usually require abrasive blasting, containment, scaffolding, long cure times, and multi-coat systems. Stopaq simplifies that.

With Stopaq Basecoat, repairs can be made with minimal surface preparation, no blasting, and no heavy equipment. Once applied, the product can even be top-coated in any color for cosmetic uniformity

This changes the economics of maintenance:

  • Less labor

  • Less equipment

  • Shorter downtime

  • Safer work environment

  • Longer-lasting repairs

For facility managers operating on tight schedules and budgets, this is a game-changer.

4. Concrete-to-Steel Interfaces and Void Filling

Areas where steel meets concrete are notorious corrosion hotspots. Stopaq’s visco-elastic fillers were designed for exactly these challenges. They flow into gaps, cracks, and voids, eliminating pathways for water and contaminants while simultaneously bonding tightly to both materials

When combined with the appropriate primer, Stopaq creates a uniform protective seal that remains flexible indefinitely—even as the concrete or steel expands and contracts over time.

Why Asset Owners Are Choosing Stopaq

Across tank terminals, refineries, chemical plants, and utilities, Stopaq coatings are being chosen because they deliver:

  • Reliable, lifelong protection

  • Minimal surface preparation

  • Quick, simple application

  • Environmentally safe chemistry

  • Significant reduction in maintenance intervals

With growing pressure on operators to reduce emissions, control costs, and improve asset integrity, Stopaq aligns with all three.

A Better Way to Protect Tanks

The industry has changed. Asset owners want solutions that are safe, fast, permanent, and cost-effective. They want coatings that can be applied without large crews, complex equipment, or lengthy shutdowns. They want systems that can handle decades of exposure without cracking, peeling, or failing.

Stopaq checks all those boxes.

And while tank chime sealing remains one of its flagship applications, the real story is much bigger:
Stopaq is a complete corrosion prevention system designed to protect every part of the tank for life.

If you’ve only been using Stopaq for chime repairs, you’re only tapping into a fraction of its potential.

Stopaq for Tank Chime Repair

Stopaq for Tank Chime Repair: A Simple, Safe, and Permanent Solution for One of the Industry’s Toughest Challenges

Tank chimes remain one of the most difficult areas of a storage tank to protect for the long term. The combination of steel, concrete, ground movement, moisture, and limited access creates an environment where traditional coatings struggle to deliver lasting performance. Add in legacy materials like coal tar and the possibility of asbestos, and remediation becomes even more complicated — often requiring specialty contractors, extensive logistics, and long project timelines.

This is exactly where Stopaq visco-elastic technology stands out. Its ability to bond permanently to virtually any substrate, self-heal micro-defects, and install without blasting or heat makes it an ideal choice for tank owners looking for a modern, low-risk approach to chime sealing.

Recently, a large petrochemical refinery put those advantages to the test.

The Challenge: Failing Coal-Tar Sealant and the Surprise of Asbestos

The refinery needed to remediate a failing coal-tar sealant at the chime area of two 16-foot storage tanks. As the sealant continued to deteriorate, moisture ingress and corrosion risk were increasing — and so was the urgency to take action.

But an unexpected complication emerged:
The existing sealant contained asbestos.

This discovery immediately ruled out abrasive blasting and other conventional prep methods. Bringing in an asbestos abatement crew would have added major cost, delays, and disruptions on an already crowded jobsite. The asset owner needed another path forward — one that would not disturb the existing material and would not introduce new hazards.

With options quickly shrinking, the refinery approached STOPAQ® to determine if a visco-elastic solution could solve the problem safely and permanently.

The Stopaq Approach: Seal, Smooth, Protect

One of the defining strengths of the Stopaq system is its simplicity. Instead of tearing out old material, grinding, blasting, heating, or rebuilding with multiple coating layers, Stopaq products can be applied directly over minimally prepared surfaces — as long as they’re clean, dry, and free of loose debris.

For this tank chime project, the installation followed a proven four-step process:

1. Surface Cleaning and Priming

The steel and concrete surfaces were cleaned to remove loose debris and contaminants.
A Stopaq primer was then applied to the concrete to preserve its integrity and ensure long-term adhesion throughout the life of the system.

2. Filling and Leveling with 4200 Filler

To bridge over the old coal-tar/asbestos layer without disturbing it, 4200 Filler was applied.
As a visco-elastic compound, it naturally flowed to fill micro-voids and create a uniform, tapered surface — a critical step for eliminating moisture traps and stabilizing the chime profile.

3. Wrappingband EZ for Permanent Bonding

Over the filler, Wrappingband EZ was installed.
This material forms a continuous, fully bonded, impermeable seal that prevents water ingress and stops corrosion at its source. The visco-elastic technology ensures a self-healing, non-aging system that remains flexible and fully adhered for decades.

4. UV-Resistant Top Coat

To finish the system and match the tank’s exterior, a UV-protective top coat was applied. This keeps the system protected from sunlight and provides a clean, uniform appearance.

The Outcome: Major Time and Cost Savings — Without Disturbing Asbestos

Because Stopaq does not require blasting, heating, or removal of old materials, the refinery avoided all asbestos disturbance and eliminated the need for specialty abatement contractors.

The results were clear:

  • 60% reduction in total project time

  • 80% reduction in total project cost

  • Zero disturbance of asbestos-containing materials

  • A fully bonded, permanent sealing system installed with minimal logistics

For the asset owner, Stopaq provided what no traditional coating system could:
A safe, simple, and permanent upgrade that worked with the limitations of the site rather than fighting against them.

Why Stopaq Is Changing the Tank Chime Landscape

Tank chimes will always be a challenging area to protect — shifting loads, moisture accumulation, and dissimilar materials guarantee it. But the Stopaq system brings several unique advantages that are difficult for other technologies to match:

  • No blasting required

  • No heat, no solvents, no VOCs

  • Compatible with steel, concrete, and existing coatings

  • Self-healing visco-elastic material

  • Fully bonded, impermeable sealing

  • Simple application with minimal crew and equipment

For facilities managing dozens or even hundreds of tanks, these benefits translate into safer job sites, lower lifecycle costs, and faster return-to-service.

Conclusion: A Better Way to Seal a Chime

As tank owners continue to look for more sustainable, more efficient solutions, Stopaq visco-elastic materials are becoming a preferred option for chime protection and rehabilitation.

In this refinery case study, Stopaq delivered exactly what the client needed:
A permanent sealing solution that avoided asbestos disturbance, reduced project risk, cut costs, and dramatically shortened the timeline.

For tank chime repair, the industry is moving beyond traditional coatings — and Stopaq is leading the way.
