 Another STOPAQ Case Study: Norway 




This latest STOPAQ® case study, completed by the good people of Norway, is a perfect example.

The project site presented a uniquely challenging set of conditions. Noise levels were so extreme that workers could only be exposed for 15 minutes at a time without proper hearing protection. In an environment like that, speed of installation wasn’t just a convenience, it was a necessity.

As if the noise alone weren’t enough, the operating conditions raised the bar even higher. Several of the lines were running at temperatures above 95°C (203°F), while also being subjected to significant vibration and pipe flexing. To make matters more complicated, sand blasting was not an option for surface preparation.

In short, this was not a job for an ordinary coating system.

The solution needed to be:

  • Fast and easy to install

  • Capable of handling high operating temperatures

  • Flexible enough to withstand vibration and pipe movement

  • Effective without blasting surface preparation

  • Durable, reliable, and cost effective

For those new to STOPAQ, the answer might come as a surprise. For those with experience, it won’t.

The solution was Wrappingband CZHT combined with an HTPP Outerwrap. Simple.

This system delivered exactly what the project demanded: excellent corrosion protection under extreme conditions, quick installation in a high-risk environment, and reliable performance at elevated temperatures—all without the need for sand blasting.

And as an added bonus?
The system also provided a noticeable noise-dampening effect, which turned out to be the cherry on top of an already cost-effective, high-performance coating solution.

This project is another reminder that when conditions get tough, simplicity and proven technology often win. STOPAQ once again delivered a solution that met every requirement—and then some.

Sometimes, the best answer really is the simplest one.

In the world of horizontal directional drilling (HDD), you don’t always get ideal working conditions. Mud, weather, tight timelines, and constant mechanical stress are part of everyday life on a drill site. Joint Specialists Celebrating 31 Years!

 

Looking Back as We Move Forward: 31 Years of Joint Specialists

As Joint Specialists, Inc. (JSI) begins our 31st year in business, we find it important to pause and reflect on where we came from — and how far the industry has evolved. Our story doesn’t really begin in 1995; our roots run much deeper than that.

Our founders, Stan Simpson and Sam Damico, were both part of the original Raychem Corporation team, working directly with the company in the early 1970s — a period that helped shape today’s modern pipeline coating industry. Their early work set the foundation for what would eventually become Joint Specialists: a company built on technical expertise, innovation, and a commitment to protecting critical infrastructure.

Recently, while looking through some old boxes in our archives, we came across nearly 50 project photo books filled with historic installations and coating projects. It’s fascinating to see how much the industry — and safety standards — have changed over the decades. Among the treasures was a set of photos from a 1973 project in Oswego, New York, showing an early Raychem heat-shrink sleeve being installed as a jacket continuation on an insulated line.

Different times, different tools — but the same core mission: creating long-lasting, reliable joint protection solutions.


Innovation and Expansion Over the Years

JSI has never stopped evolving. Our journey from those early Raychem days to the present has been marked by key milestones that expanded our capabilities and the value we bring to our customers:

  • 2014 — BBS (Bundled Bore System)
    JSI invented and launched the BBS system, a groundbreaking solution for multi-pipe bundled road bores. What started as an idea to make installations faster and cleaner has become an industry-recognized standard for bundled pipeline crossings.

  • 2019 — Powercrete Product Line
    We added the Powercrete family of epoxy coatings, enhancing our ability to deliver high-performance pipeline corrosion protection. This addition strengthened our role as a one-stop provider for both field-applied and factory coatings.

  • 2025 — Stopaq Partnership
    This year, we’re proud to announce that JSI has added Stopaq to our lineup — a unique, self-healing visco-elastic coating system that represents the next generation of pipeline corrosion prevention. It’s another step forward in our ongoing effort to provide innovative, long-term protection solutions for our clients.

Morgantown

 Morgantown Corrosion Short Course


     JSI was part of the Morgantown Corrosion Short Course that took place this month.  We showcased our BBS bumper product for bundled bores.  We also focused on Powercrete and Covalence products as excellent coating solutions for just about any pipeline operating condition. 




     In addition, Jack Wink completed a shrink sleeve demonstration.  He installed a WPCT shrink sleeve.  Those installation steps would have been:  

  1. Surface Prep
  2. Preheating the steel
  3. Wrap sleeve in place and secure closure
  4. Shrink sleeve using a broad bushy flame
  5. Roll overlap area

In the realm of purchasing and procurement, field joint coatings often find themselves at the tail end of the decision-making process. These coatings, while crucial, are frequently addressed in the eleventh hour, resulting in a significant portion of our orders falling under the "emergency" or "hot tail gate rush" category. At Joint Specialists, we understand this reality and strive to provide timely and reliable solutions.

As a distributor of Raychem products, we take pride in our ability to ship 95% of orders on the same day they are received, even under urgent circumstances. However, even for these expedited requests, we require some fundamental information to ensure the proper recommendation and pricing of our heat shrink sleeves. While obtaining the Field Joint Coating Specification makes our job significantly easier, it often involves sifting through extensive technical documentation. Nevertheless, the basic sleeve information we require includes the following:

  1. Outside Diameter of the Pipeline: This measurement helps us determine the appropriate size of the shrink sleeve needed for the application at hand. Understanding the pipeline's diameter enables us to select the most suitable product from our range of options.

  2. Operating Temperature: Covalence, the manufacturer of our shrink sleeves, produces a variety of products with different adhesive properties. The operating temperature of the pipeline plays a vital role in adhesive performance. Knowing this information allows us to recommend the most effective heat shrink sleeve for the specific temperature conditions.

  3. Factory Applied Coating: It is important to consider the compatibility of adhesives with the existing factory applied line coating. Not all adhesives work harmoniously with every type of coating. For example, hot melt adhesives are generally not compatible with Polypropylene coatings. Identifying these potential issues in advance helps avoid costly discoveries during field operations, such as on a pipe lay barge where every day of operation carries significant financial implications.

  4. Cutbacks: A cutback refers to the exposed steel surface between the factory applied coating and the end of the pipe. To determine the amount of bare steel present at a field joint, we multiply the cutback measurement by two. This calculation aids us in selecting an appropriately sized shrink sleeve for optimal coverage and protection (refer to resources [here] and [here] for further details).

Additionally, we require information regarding the specific application in which the heat shrink sleeve will be used. Factors such as whether it is a standard "drop in the ditch" pipeline, a road bore, a directional drill, a high-temperature line, an onshore or offshore project, or even a deep-water scenario, all influence our product recommendations. Understanding these details ensures that we provide tailored solutions for diverse operational environments, taking into account any unique challenges or requirements associated with each application.

At Joint Specialists, we understand the practical realities of the buying process. Often, field joint coatings are among the last details to be addressed. Bundled directional drilling applications present a unique challenge in the pipeline industry as different pipe sections can damage each other during installation. Joint Specialists, a leader in pipeline solutions, has developed a solution to address this problem. The Bore Bumper System (BBS) is a proven and reliable solution for preventing pipeline damage during bundled directional drilling applications.

The BBS system is primarily composed of two components - a specially formulated and designed rubber bumper material and a heat shrinkable vehicle. The rubber bumper material is carefully selected, evaluated, and proven to provide a cushion and space between the pipelines during installation. The heat shrinkable vehicle is a reliable component with a long history of use, ensuring that the bumper stays in place throughout the pulling process and beyond.

In the past, other solutions, such as rope with duct tape, have been used to prevent pipe collisions, but these solutions are not reliable. Some solutions are intricately complicated, with additional products on a pipeline that are designed to withstand the forces of road bore, introducing metal bands on the pipeline, which is a risky approach. In contrast, the BBS system is a proven and simple solution that only uses products specifically designed to withstand road bore forces. It offers abrasion resistance, penetration resistance, shear, and impact resistance values that are top of the line.

Each BBS kit includes two specially formulated bumpers, a suitable amount of S1301M Two Part Epoxy Primer, a high shear heat shrinkable sleeve, a high shear heat shrinkable leader strip, and duct tape to hold the bumpers in place until the sleeves have been installed. The spacing of BBS bumpers and sleeves is determined by the end user guidelines.

To install the BBS system, all pipe surfaces involved in the application must be free of all oils, dust, dirt, mud, or any other substance that would reduce or prevent a proper bond. The pipe surfaces should be preheated to a temperature between 140F and 160F, and the bumpers should be wrapped around the pipe quickly and secured in place using a small amount of duct tape. The S1301M Epoxy should be mixed and applied in a thin coat covering all parts of the pipe that will be in contact with the shrink sleeve. The wider shrink sleeve should be wrapped around the pipe quickly and centered on the bumpers. Finally, the closure strip should be secured using the propane torch and a gloved hand.

In conclusion, the Bore Bumper System is a proven solution to prevent pipeline damage during bundled directional drilling applications. Joint Specialists has developed a reliable and straightforward system that is designed to keep space between pipelines involved in a bundled directional drill. JSI Celebrates 20 Years as a Pipeline Coating Supply Leader

     In 2015, Joint Specialists celebrates their twentieth year as a leader in the pipeline coating world.  Throughout every one of those twenty years, we have been fully and completely committed to representing Raychem / Covalence / Berry Plastics as our primary (and for many of those years sole) product responsibility.  With direct responsibility for US product sales, we have excelled year after year, specifying, processing, manufacturing and selling many million heat shrinkable sleeves and pipeline coating solutions.

     Our story doesn't actually begin in 1995 though!  Our story starts back in the late 1970's when Stan Simpson and Sam Damico were both young men with dreams of building a career under the tutelage of Raychem great:  Paul Cook.  Both Stan and Sam excelled within Raychem spending the their entire careers involved with Raychem (currently called Covalence) as direct employees or distributors.  

     So while Joint Specialists is celebrating twenty years as a company, our history with the Raychem / Covalence product line actually currently stretches back around 37 years!  I expect there haven't been many folks in this day and age who are able to spend 37 years committed to a single product line.  

     As for me, I'm just a babe in comparison, celebrating my 15th year with Joint Specialists and committed to the Raychem / Covalence / Tyco Adhesives product line.  As I've said many times, no matter the company name; the products are built in the same plant, using the same formulas, built from the same manufacturing specifications.  Different name at times - but same Raychem quality and ingenuity.  

     There aren't many people in the industry who can match our dedication and commitment to this product line.  There aren't many people who can match our experience level.  There aren't many people who can match our technical knowledge.  There aren't many people who can match our access to large volumes of inventory.

TWDB - Joint Specialists

TWDB Themofit Wraparound Duct Bands

     Thermofit Wraparound Duct Bands are heat shrinkable tapes, made of cross linked polyolefin, precoated with a hotmelt adhesive.  The band is cut to length on on the jobsite, wrapped around the duct joint and fixed at the overlap with a pressure sensitive adhesive patch.  TWDB is black in color in terms of the backing and also black in color with regard to the adhesive.  This is a product that shrinks at 125C which can be achieved with an open flame or with an industrial hot air gun.

     The typical application for this product is as a pressure sealing joint on round or flat oval ducts in air conditioning or heating systems.  TWDB can be used at up to 70C and pressures up to 50 kPa at 25C.  It is highly recommended for spiral ducting in high velocity air conditioning. 

     TWDB is available in standard widths of 3" and 4".  All rolls are 165 feet long and shipped within boxes can aid with measuring as each TWDB strip is cut.  The backing wall thickness is a nominal .5mm.  The adhesive coating thickness is a nominal .7mm.  This product is manufactured to shrink 15% which is significantly less than most of our heat shrinkable pipeline coatings which can range anywhere from 25% to 66%.

     Each TWDB roll is packed in a unique box, containing TWDB and a roll of positioning patches.  Installation instructions and recommended cut lengths are printed on the box.  Generally, the 3" wide TWDB will include 35 of the pressure sensitive closing patches.  The 4" wide will generally include 20 of the closing tape patches. 

     For the most part, the 3" TWDB is recommended for duct sizes of 400-800mm.  The 4" TWDB is recommended for duct sizes larger than that.  There really is no limit though.  The 4" TWDB could be used on any size duct offering even more overlap onto the adjacent ductwork.
