WPC100M In Stock!

 Covalence WPC100M - In Stock!

Raychem WPC100M
Covalence WPC100M is the mastic shrink sleeve with the highest temperature rating

WPC100M was invented back when Raychem was the name of the manufacturing company.  Using a high temp butyl mastic sealant and an irradiated polyolefin backing, WPC100M very quickly became the coating of choice for a number of higher temperature pipeline applications.

Rated for use on pipelines operating at up to 176F when the sleeve will see direct contact with soil or the ocean floor, WPC100M has the added feature that in cases where a pipeline is insulated or concrete coated; the sleeve is rated for use at up to 212F.

Beyond all of that, WPC100M was an ideal offshore field joint coating is it required only wire brushed surface preparation (the butyl mastic is very aggressive).  This allowed for VERY fast installations and offshore; time is money.

Available in widths of 11", 17", 24" and 34" --- WPC100M can also be available in custom widths (less than 34").

We do stock WPC100M in our warehouse and can have sleeves ready to ship within hours.  As of this moment, I have several thousand feet of WPC100M ready to go at a moments notice!  Reach out for more information:  steve@jsicoatings.com  936/321-3333

WPC100M Shrink Sleeve Widths

In What Widths is WPC100M Available?

Example of some partial rolls.  From left to right:  17", 24" and 11"

WPC100M is a wrap around shrink sleeve manufactured by Seal for Life and sold through their Covalence brand (formerly Raychem).  WPC100M uses a butyl mastic sealant to prevent corrosion on field joints of pipelines that will operate at elevated temperatures.  When the shrink sleeve will be in contact with soil, WPC100M is rated for use at 176F.  If the WPC100M shrink sleeve is not directly exposed to soil (concrete coated pipe; insulated line; etc) then the sleeve is rated for use at 212F.

offshore shrink sleeve
Historically, WPC100M founds its primary home protecting offshore pipelines.  There are many onshore applications for it as well.

So, how do you know what the optimal sleeve width is for your specific project?  That is a fairly simple answer.  The sleeve needs to be wide enough to coat the bare steel of the field joint and overlap onto the adjacent factory applied coating (both sides) by at least 3" per side.  So if you have 4" of bare steel cutback at your field joint, and you then need 3" of overlap on one side of the weld and 3" of overlap on the other side of the weld; you would need a sleeve that is AT LEAST 10" wide (closest standard is 11").

Notice the 'at least'.  There are many cases where a company realizes they could use an 11" wide shrink sleeve, but they choose to use a 17" or 24" wide sleeve instead to increase the area of their seal.

So what widths are stocked on a regular basis at JSI?  At any given moment, I may have ~20,000 feet of the following various sizes:

  • WPC100M 11x100 (11" wide)
  • WPC100M 17x100 (17" wide)
  • WPC100M 24x100 (24" wide)
  • WPC100M 34x100 (34" wide)

WPC100M

High Temp Shrink Sleeves

m100 shrink
An installed WPC100M sleeve.
In the oil and gas coatings world, many lines are designed to have the capability to coat a pipeline that could operate at up to 100C.  In terms of factory coatings, a 100C line has a number of options:  high temp FBE, PP or PE being just a few of them.  WPC100M is compatible with any of those options.  The aggressive mastic of the WPC100M bonds well to any commonly applied pipeline coating.  In addition, the surface preparation is not nearly as stringent as many epoxies and WPC100M is a very practical field application.  Save money on surface prep and save time on labor with WPC100M.

SZAR Shrink Sleeves

SZAR Splash Zone Shrink Sleeves

offshore shrink sleeve

Szar (Splash Zone and Subsea Corrosion Protection for Conductor Connectors) is designed to completely seal offshore conductor connectors exposed to splash zone and subsea environments.  The installed sleeve encapsulates the connector and bonds to the conductor on either side.  The product prevents seawater from entering the connector joint and causing internal corrosion.

Cathodic protection is ineffective in the splash zone and on recessed areas such as the inside connectors on the subsea portions of conductors.  Effective corrosion protection for all connectors above the seabed can be achieved by using SZAR connector protection sleeves.

SZAR wrap around heat shrinkable sleeves are constructed of fibre reinforced, modified polyolefin.  They are precoated with a high shear strength, hot melt adhesive that chemically bonds to a two part epoxy primer.  The system provides mechanical strength and exceptional long term adhesion to steel.

The unique construction of the SZAR sleeve provides a tough, split resistant, low profile coating capable of withstanding the rigours of offshore installation and long term exposure to constant wave action, abrasion and impact.

SZAR sleeves are heat shrinkable and they easily accommodate diameter differences between the conductor and connector.  Special filler strips can be provided to accommodate grooves and diameter transitions on connectors.  The filler strips soften during installation to conform to the surface of the connector and fill possible voids.

High performance coatings require grit blasting for effective surface preparation.  Although this can be done offshore during conductor stringing, it is much simpler to grit blast the connectors onshore and apply a coating of SZAR Epoxy Primer (S1301M).  This process will maintain the surface profile and greatly simplify offshore operations.

To install offshore, simply preheat the connector with a propane torch to remove moisture, hand apply a second epoxy primer coating and wrap and shrink the sleeve.

Offshore Field Joint Coating

Heat Shrink Sleeves for Offshore Field Joint Coating

Heat shrinkable sleeves have been used successfully on offshore oil and gas pipelines more many, many years.  Whether installed in a J-Lay or an S-Lay, literally hundreds of thousands of heat shrink sleeves are currently preventing corrosion on field joints in the worlds oceans, gulfs and seas.  Heat shrink sleeves have always been a reliable and easy to install option for most offshore project.  Requiring very little specialized equipment, many heat shrink sleeves can be installed on wire brushed (or power brush) pipe surfaces and many heat shrink sleeves can be installed with nothing more than a propane torch and a silicon roller.  With those simple tools and with minimal training, an easily repeatable, consistent, simple; and most importantly:  fast installation -- heat shrink sleeves are very often the most logical choice for offshore field joint coatings of subsea pipelines.

One of the most commonly used shrink sleeve material types used on offshore pipelines is the WPC100M.  WPC stands for Wraparound Pipe Coating.  The 100M tells us that the sleeve is rated to a temperature of 100C continuous operating temperature and the M tells us that the adhesive sealant of the shrink sleeve is a mastic material (butyl mastic in this case).  WPC100M is a product that can be installed over a wire brushed pipe surface.  WPC100M also requires that the substrate be preheated to a temperature of 212F prior to wrapping and heat shrinking the sleeve.  Residual heat from the welding station can certainly be used as the supply of that preheat temperature as long as the temperature exceeds 212F while staying under 260F (the sleeve would insta-shrink if the backing were exposed to temperatures above its crystalline melt point; which is ~267F).  The sleeve is then torch shrunk in place until it conforms to all substrate surfaces and mastic flow is evident at all edges.  Installation is very quick and we have performed time trials in the past where we installed WPC100M on a 36" pipeline in less than four minutes per field joint using two installers; each with a high output propane torch.

WPCT is another heat shrink sleeve product that has been used extensively offshore.  Very similar to the WPC100M above, WPCT can be installed over a wire brushed pipe surface.  The preheat temperature for WPCT is in the 140F range.  As you might logically have already concluded; the fact that the preheat temperature for WPCT is lower than the preheat temperature of WPC100M does indeed mean that the approved operating temperature for WPCT is lower than WPC100M.  WPCT is generally approved for use on pipelines operating at or below 104F.

Both WPCT and WPC100M are available in a variety of widths less than or equal to 34.25".  Standard options are 11", 17", 24" and 34", but we do have the capability to offer up custom widths for any products that we sell.  In addition, all WPCT and WPC100M sleeves that we sell are offered as /UNI sleeves.  This means that the closure strips are preattached to the shrink sleeve material here in our shop.  This makes the installers jobs even easier and removes the risk of lost closures.

High Temp Shrink Sleeve - WPC100M

High Temp Shrink Sleeve
WPC100M

Berry WPC100M
Covalence WPC100M (formerly Raychem / Berry)
WPC100M is a wrap around heat shrink sleeve designed for use on pipelines that will operate at elevated temperatures.  In a situation where this sleeve will be in contact with soil (buried as an example) it is rated to 80C (176F).  In cases where this sleeve will be encapsulated in some way (beneath an infill system; beneath insulation, etc) it is rated to 100C (212F).

With a long, successful use history, WPC100M has proven reliability both in terms of performance and in terms of having a simple, easily repeatable installation.  WPC100M is a two layer heat shrink sleeve.  The outer layer is a radiation crosslinked, high density polyethylene.  The inner layer is a specially formulated, aggressive mastic sealant.

Like many of the other products in the Covalence Heat Shrinkable products family, WPC100M is supplied with PCI.  This means that the backing of the sleeve is supplied with a dimpled cross hatch pattern and as the shrink sleeve is properly shrunk, this pattern fades to a smooth surface.  This gives installers, inspectors and end users the confidence of knowing that heat shrink sleeve was properly heated during installation.

The aggressive mastic sealant is also capable of bonding to all commonly used pipeline coatings; including (but not limited to) FBE, polypropylene, polyethylene and CTE.  This makes the WPC100M one of the most versatile products in the market place.  WPC100M can be used on any pipe size; from 2" up to and beyond 48".
