     If your experience is like mine, when you have a need for Tyco Electronics Raychem parts; the response times and lead times can be frustrating.  I've even talked to folks who are no longer going to offer Raychem/Tyco products because they want to avoid the headache.  I've been there too!  I am in the process of increasing our inventory levels, in the hopes that I can help you to avoid that problem.

Sealing Cathodic Protection Wire Connections

Sealing a CP Cable Connection

    Time is money.  That is a reality in this world.  When sealing up a cable connection, you have many options available to you; everything from wrapping to shrinking to curing products.  Here is something you may not have seen before:  a snapping product: GHFC. 

     That is actually GILS in that video, but the GHFC is based on the same technology, same gel closure, just slightly smaller in length.  This is an H frame gel closure for low voltage power cables running at 1000 volts or less.  It provides a fast and simple method for insulating and environmentally sealing low voltage cable taps and splices. 

     This closure uses Tyco Electronics / Raychem's innovative Power Gel sealant material to seal and protect the connection from moisture ingress, corrosion and pollution.  It is ideal for both underground and overhead applications and is especially useful for street lighting applications.

     I don't mention it much here, but in addition to being Master Distributors for Covalence Heat Shrink Sleeves -- and Distributors for Denso Corrosion Prevention Products (which includes Protal 7200) -- and being distributors for Powercrete J; we are also Elite Distributors for Raychem / Tyco Electronics.  

     Once part of the same company, Raychem Energy and Raychem Pipeline were two divisions underneath the giant (and magical) company that was Raychem Corp.  As Raychem was broken apart; Raychem Pipeline and Raychem Energy ultimately ended up being owned by different companies (Raychem Pipeline now ultimately owned by Berry Plastics as a division of Seal for Life and Raychem Energy now owned by Tyco Electronics).  As a result - there is a LOT of confusion about this topic, if you're interested, here is a slightly more thorough explanation of the history of Raychem Corp as a brand name.

Raychem Shrink Sleeves for Pipeline Use and Electrical Use

     Ok!  I know that is an awfully strange title for a post (up there) but this is really meant to serve as a public service announcement.  It seems that just about everyone in the world knows the Raychem name, but many people in the world are unfamiliar with the exact spelling of the name.  That makes sense of course - as Raychem isn't a "real word."  Instead it is a combination of the two words:  Radiation Chemistry.  Of course - based on that (or if you knew that), you would logically think that in that case, Raychem should be spelled Rachem (as some people do).  Well, you'd be incorrect -- but hopefully you'd still find it!

     "A rose by any other name would still smell as sweet."  Well, I think it could also said that a shrink sleeve system (whether for pipeline or electrical application) by any other name...is still as reliable, effective, dependable, available, cost effective and simple to install...."  Is that too long of a slogan for a business card?  I tend to think so.  

     So, if you've found this page because you searched for Raychem using one of the spellings listed above (Raychem, Raychm, Raycham, Rychem, Ray Chem, Reychem or Rachem) - then.....you are welcome!  I hope you haven't google surfed for too long before finding this page!

How Do I Seal Up a Buried Flange?

     In the world of flanges; finding a way to properly seal a buried flange can be quite difficult.  There are some methods out there; but they are often messy and difficult.  Beyond that; what if you need to get back into that flange?  Allow me to introduce the Covalence Flangeseal. 

Covalence FlangeSeal

     Flangeseal is made from a high expansion, fiber sheet reinforced heat shrink sleeve.  It is built to bridge the large OD differentials between a flange OD and the pipe OD.  Coated with an aggressive mastic sealant; the Flangeseal (FS) bonds to all commonly used factory applied coating.  The Flangeseal also exhibits superior penetration and abrasion resistance thanks to the high density backing and the fiber sheet reinforcement. 

     In addition, the Flangeseal can be installed (if you choose) to be re-enterable.  In such a case; some cardboard (supplied) is wrapped around the bolt section of the flange and if necessary; the Flangeseal can be removed from that section using a sharp razor knife.  No need to pack the bolts with wax; no need for a messy pour of PU foam; no need for any of those awful; messy options.  The Flangeseal is here to make your life easier and reduce labor costs.  Call today for pricing:  we will need the OD of the flange and the OD of the pipe.

Answer:  NO!  We stock and sell ONLY Covalence (formerly Raychem) heat shrinkable sleeve products.  They have always been black and have never been yellow.  Covalence shrink sleeves have by far the longest, most successful use history on the market (in the world) today.  Why aren't you buying the better product??  I think you'll be surprised to find that with Covalance / Raychem you get a better, more proven product without even spending more for it!

Can I Use WPCT on a Road Bore?

Question:  Can I use WPCT on a Road Bore?

Answer:  NO!!! No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

     WPCT is not designed to withstand the tremendous forces associated with a road bore.  I could not recommend that.  The plant would not stand behind that.  I think this would be a mistake.  

     WPCT is ~3 mm thick if the backing is fully recovered.  DIRAX (our product designed for road bores - read more here) would be more than 7.5 mm thick on the front end - AND has a fiber mesh woven into the backing to offer even greater protection.

     I am aware that the cost difference between DIRAX and WPCT is significant, but this cost must be viewed in line with the cost associated with corrosion problems; with a pipeline leak or with repair costs.  Please, do yourself, your company, your pipeline -- and the neighbors of the pipeline a favor and use DIRAX on your directional drilling field joint coatings.

Heat Shrink Sleeves: Most Dangerous Installation Error

  Question:  What is the most dangerous installation error when installing a heat shrinkable sleeve?

  Answer:  I'm going to overlook things like 'failing to clean the pipe' and 'failing to preheat the pipe'.  The most dangerous installation error is an installer who simply fails to care for the bottom of the pipe.

  Pipeline spreads are often NOT pretty.

A fairly typical (maybe even a 'good' pipeline spread.

 As you can see, there just isn't very much room underneath the pipe.  But still, the bottom half of the pipeline must still be cleaned and preheated.  In addition, the bottom of the sleeve must be shrunk and shrunk appropriately!  This same potential problem exists for any coating of course; working a liquid epoxy to prevent icicles can be even more challenging.

In any case, anytime an inspector asks me "what should I be looking for" one of the first things out of my mouth is that he's almost certainly going to need to get his knees dirty as he'll be crouching down under that pipeline to make sure the sleeve has been properly shrunk on the bottom of the pipe (and he/she needs to be familiar with this page!)

 

What Happened to Raychem Corp?

I was at OTC last week and NACE just a month or two ago.  It is amazing how often this question comes up!  The short answer to this question is: only the name changed.  The longer answer is...

In 1999 a company called Tyco International purchased Raychem Corp (depending on how good your memory is, you may have seen Tyco in the news a time or two).  Our world (Raychem Pipeline) didn't really experience much of a change.  We were able to continue with the Raychem name with no issues.

Sometime around 2007, Tyco International split into three companies.  One of those companies was Tyco Electronics.  Again we were able to continue using the Raychem name; the products were labelled Raychem, etc.

Also at this time however, the Raychem Pipeline Group, along with Polyken Tape and Powercrete liquid epoxies were grouped up and sold off to a company called Berry Plastics (a giant company).  The Raychem name was to say with Tyco Electronics at that time and Berry Plastics would have a limited amount of time to re-brand Raychem Pipeline Products into something else.  Thus, Covalence CPG was born.  During this period; the original Raychem Pipeline Products were transitioned into being called "Covalence Raychem" and then within a few months to being called strictly "Covalence."

This lasted for a couple years (maybe less) and then the product was briefly re-branded as a Berry Plastics product.  When I say briefly, I might hazard a guess that it was less than a year.  I shudder to think of the cost of changing data sheets; reprinting boxes; buying new labels, modifying production lines to print the new company name on the products and a multitude of other visible and hidden expenses.

The Berry Plastics days were very limited (though they do still own Covalence and several other pipe coating technologies.  So the old Raychem product line has gone back to being called "Covalence Heat Shrinkable Products" (as you can see in the logo just up the page).  So, back one generation in the name, but we do have a new product family that we are a part of:  Seal for Life.  Seal for Life is the name of the company who owns:  Stopaq (a viscoelastic / polyisobutylene product); Polyken (cold applied tapes and factory applied line coatings); Powercrete (a liquid epoxy for field joint coating and another used as an abrasion resistant overcoat for factory applied FBE) and Anodeflex (a long line, linear anode that is a fantastic cathodic protection solution for difficult, rocky soils and for rehab work).  This new Seal for Life logo is as follows:

Now, through all of those changes, there are several things that have never changed.  We still have the same manufacturing specifications, the same raw materials, the same brilliant research and development people; the same factory; great adhesives; fantastic backing and without a doubt the highest quality product on the market today.  Don't let the name changes fool you.  We've been a technological leader in pipeline coatings for 40 years now.  We have proven products.  We have technical expertise.  We have long, successful use histories.  We have it all.  Now - how can we help you with your next job?
